Guide to Firework Laws and When to Buy
Fireworks are a beloved part of many celebrations, but it's important to make sure you're using them safely and legally. In the UK, there are laws in place that regulate when and where you can buy and use fireworks.
One of the most important things to know is that it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18. Additionally, it is illegal to possess adult fireworks (category 2 and 3) in a public place if you are under the age of 18.
In terms of when you can buy fireworks, there are certain times of the year when they can be sold. For consumer fireworks (category 1, 2, and 3), they can be sold all year around.
However, there are certain times of the year when fireworks can be used. For example, fireworks can be used on the following days:
- New Year's Eve
- Chinese New Year
- Diwali
- Guy Fawkes Night (5th of November)
- New Year's Day (1st of January)
- The first day of the Eid al-Fitr
- The first day of the Chinese New Year
It's also important to note that there are local restrictions on the use of fireworks. For example, some local authorities may have specific rules in place regarding the use of fireworks, such as noise restrictions or designated areas where fireworks can be used.

There are no specific days of the year when fireworks can be used in the UK, rather it is restricted to certain times of the day. It is illegal to set off fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am, with the exception of:
- New Year's Eve, when the cut-off time is extended to 1am
- Chinese New Year, Diwali, and the first day of Eid al-Fitr, when the cut-off time is extended to 1am
- Bonfire Night, when the cut-off time is extended to midnight
Additionally, there may be local restrictions on the use of fireworks, such as noise restrictions or designated areas where fireworks can be used, so it's important to check with your local authorities before setting off any fireworks.
